What a building site teaches about patience

Towers rise one floor at a time. So do careers, institutions and cities.

Watch a tall building go up and you notice how little seems to happen for a long time. Months go into foundations nobody will ever see. Then, almost suddenly, a floor appears every week.

It is a useful picture for any long piece of work. The visible progress comes late. The work that makes it possible comes first, and it is usually invisible.

Foundations first

In projects, the foundations are clear goals, honest plans and the right people. In careers, they are skills and relationships built quietly over years. In institutions and cities, they are trust and the systems that make everyday life work.

The best time to plant a tree was twenty years ago. The second best time is now.

Measuring slow progress

When results take time, it helps to measure the inputs you control: the hours spent learning, the conversations held, the small milestones reached. They are a better guide than waiting for the finished tower.

Every skyline started as an empty plot and a plan. The patience in between is what builds it.
